Fire Retardant Textiles - 100%Cotton, 88%Cotton+12%Nylon
If you're familiar with flame resistant apparel (FR), you've probably heard terms like treated fabrics and fibers or inherent fabrics and fibers. Treated Cotton fibers are those Cotton fibers that have had flame retardant chemicals applied to them during the Cotton fiber formation process. As a result, it makes Cotton fibers flame retardant. Fabrics made from treated Cotton fibers are flame retardant for the life of the garment. Flame retardant chemicals cannot be removed through normal wear and tear or washing. Only when a garment is torn or soiled to the point where the soil will not wash away does it cease to be flame retardant.
Another fiber type is a blend of 88% Cotton + 12% Nylon fibers. Fabrics made from these fiber blends have a soft, comfortable cotton feel. The added Nylon fiber has a soft but strong composition. It is also resistant to chemicals and solvents. This makes these fiber types ideal for use in flame retardant environments.
Applications for these Fire Retardant Textiles are more common. Industrial protective clothing, utility and firefighter workwear are good matches. As with treated fabrics, it is recommended that treated fibers be washed in the same manner. Too hard for water may leave deposits that could ignite if exposed to an ignition source. The only significant difference in caring for these two types is that denatured acrylic/cotton blends should be treated with non-chlorine bleach in soft water, as it will weaken the fabric.
